How to plant cucumber: attention to season
Before addressing how to plant cucumber, it is important to
highlight some characteristics of the cultivar.
The cucumber plant is climbing and its branches can reach
from 1 m to 3 m in length. Its fruits can
be consumed still immature, or even raw and even in preserves, very common in
other countries, although there is this type of product also in Brazil.
Who wants to know how to plant cucumber needs to be aware of
the time of planting. The cucumber originates from warmer climates, although it
adapts to milder temperatures. It occurs that, at lower temperatures, the
plantation is greatly affected, at risk of being decimated in case of frost. In
this way, planting is recommended in summer or spring.
On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that autumn and
winter are favorable for the formation of female flowers, thanks to the milder
climate at night. To avoid the evils of the cold, it is recommended to grow
them in greenhouses in the winter, because in this way the temperatures will be
more balanced to the cucumber.
However, it is worth mentioning that only
gyno-parthenocarpic cultivars do best in totally closed greenhouses, regardless
of summer or winter. The other species depend on bee pollination, so they need
the sides of the open greenhouses.
Since the cucumber is a summer fan, obviously it grows best
with direct sunlight on it for at least a few hours of the day. Along with
that, keep it watered so that it never leaves the roots dry. But beware: do not
soak the soil, as this can also be harmful to the plant.
How to plant cucumber: germination, care and harvesting
For you to have how to plant cucumber correctly, you need to
have attention to the soil. It must be fertile and rich in organic matter. In
addition, it should be well drained and its pH should be around 5.5
and 6.8.
Fan of heat, the cucumber seeds do not germinate
satisfactorily below 20ºC. Ideally, the cultivar should be
planted directly at the time, as the seedlings can be damaged during
transplantation.
But if you want to, you can first plant in pots, plastic
sacks for seedlings or even cups made from newspaper and then carry out the
transplant to the vegetable garden. However, be very careful not to injure the
seedlings. They should be sown 2 or 3
cm deep and take five to 15 days to germinate and then make the
change to the final location.
In the process of planting cucumber, the spacing is an item
that can generate a little confusion, as it varies greatly according to the
cultivar and the method employed. In tutored cultivation, for example, one
should keep between 60 cm and 1
m of space between the planting lines and 45 cm to 50
cm between the plants.
In the case of cultivation of plants that grow low, the
spacing goes to 2 m between rows and from 75
cm to 1 meter between cultivars. To produce
pickled cucumber, it is recommended to leave 1 m at 1.2
m distance between rows and 20 cm between plants.
Another important thing in how to plant cucumber is on the
way that it grows, in a creeping way, or tutored, necessitating, then, of a
fence or a trellis.
It is recommended to cut branch tips to better branch the
plants, but this can only be done when the branches reach the full height of
the support.
The harvest takes about 30 to 70
days after the definitive planting of the cultivar. However, in the case of
pickled cucumbers, they can be harvested earlier, when it is between 3
cm to 9 cm in length.
But in general, the harvest should be done when the
vegetable shows to be well developed, without, however, maturing.
